I own hundreds of movies, each displaying a handful of actors and actresses, both well known and unheard of. If you are someone who hardly ever watches a movie, but when you do you want it to count, then look no further than the movies containing these ten amazing and wonderful performances!!
.) Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening in American Beauty -- These two play borderline malevolent married couple Lester and Carolyn Burnham. Kevin Spacey is greatly entertaining and funny as a man with, "nothing to lose", as he leads a tumultuously twisted life. Annette Bening is great as his lonely and joyless wife, who on the outside may have everything, but on the inside has lost everything. Their performances earned both academy award nominations and a win for Kevin Spacey.
.) Gloria Swanson in Sunset Blvd -- She captivated audiences and movie critics alike in this startlingly tragic and gritty look on the dark side of Hollywood. She played the half-mad Norma Desmond, a has been silent film actress, who ironically, is what Gloria Swanson was herself. This film gave Gloria an Oscar nomination.
.) Bette Davis in All About Eve -- In this film, premiering the same year as Sunset Blvd, the tragic and dark side of the theater world and fame itself is brought into full color, and shows the truest sides of humans and their intentions. Bette Davis was unforgettable as the aging actress who is overthrown by the seemingly naive Eve. This performance gave Bette Davis an Oscar nomination.
.) Anne Baxter in All About Eve -- Anne plays the seemingly naive Eve, who's true intentions are revealed to Bette Davis's character Margo Channing, and is expertly crafted and acted. This performance gave Anne Baxter an Oscar nomination as well.
.) Beatrice Straight in Network -- Beatrice plays the two-timed wife of a television executive who gives the greatest five minutes of acting ever caught on film. She won an Oscar for the performance, and was the shortest performance to win or be nominated for an Oscar in movie history.
.) Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice -- Meryl plays the Nazi War Camp survivor Sophie who befriends the southern writer "Stingo". As we grow to love Sophie as Stingo does, we also learn the hidden and deeply troubling history of Sophie and her lover Nate. This amazingly beautiful and deeply saddening performance gave Meryl Streep her second Oscar win and fourth nomination.
