Many different kinds of music can be inspirational from rock & roll to country and southern gospel. The reason is, music in general can have an inspirational message that you can relate to or it can be linked to a particular time in your life that has meaning. Whatever it is, we all use music as an integral part of our spiritual lives to find that inspiration that drives us.
Inspirational music has a very inherent effect in the way it is written, performed, and, interpreted. It is a way of lifting up your spirit when you listen to it or empowering you to great things. In southern gospel it can traced all the way back to its core roots where slaves sang "spirituals" to keep themselves in an inspired state of mind while in a horrific situation. When the traveling preachers adopted it in the early 1900's it was different as they added instruments but still had the inspirational element that moved so many. It was now beginning to inspire the mainstream through tent revivals and church groups. As it made its way into the white and black churches of the south, it became more of an eclectic form of southern gospel with groups singing black gospel inspired songs a capella. This was the birth of the Baptist revival inspired churches that were very full of music and energy. If you have ever been to a true southern Baptist church, you know what I am referring to. You would find it hard not to be inspired with that kind of energy all around you.
As it moved into the 1920's, 30's and 40's, it began to inspire a whole new generation. Even though the 20's 30's and 40's were mostly depressed as the Great Depression and World War II hit them, it could not have been a better time for inspirational music. At a time when our country was at its lowest and with Americans desperation at an all-time high inspirational southern gospel music found its biggest need. People relied on the church to keep them motivated, get them through the tough times, and music was a large part of that.
Even today in 21st century, we still rely heavily on inspirational music to keep us on track inspired and motivated. When the economy is on a downturn and many friends and family are seeing tough times, it is not only important to be able to rely on each other but just as important to have external outlets to inspire us as well. They also say in a down economy one of the most profitable businesses is the entertainment business, the reason is people are looking for a sense of inspiration, and there is no better place to find that than in music.

If you're a Metal player then a Gibson, Ibanez or an ESP will be right up your alley. If you are a Country player you'll probably be right at home with a Fender Telecaster. Even though these examples are a pretty safe generalisation, my advice is to always do your own research and satisfy yourself.
* Browse local and internet stores for various styles of electric guitars. Guitars are works of art and you will want something that you love to look at just as much as you love to play it. The more you love it the more you will pick it up. The more you pick it up the more likely you will be to play it and improve your playing.
* Quality is generally better with established well-known brands. That said, you can find great guitars from lesser known brands if you know what you're looking for and if you get the right information. I love going and talking to my local guitar repairer or luthier. They keep up to date on which factory is pumping out various brands, who owns who, what technology is being used in the manufacture and build quality of various guitars and the specifications of a wide range of guitars. Go and make friends with your luthier!
* Tone is everything. Make sure you play your guitar through a nice amp. The last thing you want is an awesome guitar that sounds lack lustre because the amp you're playing it through is awful. Find a good amp to try out your guitar choices through and stick with it so you can get an idea of the difference in quality between different guitars. Once you have narrowed your search down to a few guitars, then it is a good time for you to try those guitars through some different amps to find your ultimate combination. Although this will take a while, it will be worth it - you have to listen to it every time you play.
Above all, go with your gut. You're the only one you have to please. If you take your time and follow your instincts you should be on your new guitar and loving it in no time.

The 10 Best Albums Of All Time

We all know that there are no right or wrong answers when naming the greatest albums of all time. It's a purely subjective thought process that is influenced, more than anything, by age. Most of us think that the albums we grew up with - the ones that provided the soundtracks to our youth, are the best. However, the perceived wisdom is that there are ten albums, all of which were released between 1965 and 1979, that provided the template for everything that followed. These are as follows:
1. Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles. Released in 1967, this album combines concept, sublime songwriting, art, musicianship and technology to create a heady and unforgettable mix. The thirteen songs comprise the apex of The Beatles' recorded work. Ambitious beyond belief, it took 700 hours to record and it's multi-tracking and lush orchestration changed the way music was made. Paul McCartney described it very modestly as "...just us doing a good show".
2. Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys. The inspiration for Sgt Pepper, songs like "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" and "I'm Waiting For The Day" signalled the end of the innocent pop music previously associated with the band. In reality, this was a Brian Wilson solo effort, with the band being used to flesh out the vocal parts. This undoubted genius created a wistful, melodic, heartbreaking masterpiece.
3. Revolver - The Beatles. More adventurous than 'Rubber Soul', it was the genesis of psychedelia on it's release in 1966. Lennon's "Tomorrow Never Knows" was a musical trip and McCartney's astonishingly mature "Eleanor Rigby" and "For No One" are indicative of his position as the pre-eminent songwriter of the 60's. Revolver meant that pop music could now go just about anywhere.
4. Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan. Recorded in a week and released in the Summer of 1965, this album changed just about everything. It contains the epic "Like A Rolling Stone" - a six minute classic which is rightly regarded as the greatest pop song of all time, and which managed to combine tart sarcasm, grace, beauty and a breathless melody. The final track, "Desolation Row" was a surreal vision of hell that, in retrospect, was a warning of much darker times to come.
5. Rubber Soul - The Beatles. Released at Christmas in 1965, this was the moment when The Beatles ceased being the four mop-tops, and morphed effortlessly into an album band. And the Dylan influences ("Norwegian Wood", "I'm Looking Through You") brought a harsher edge to the music.
6. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye. Marvin's greatest work encompassed his thoughts on the Vietnam war, the civil rights movement and the environment and smashed Motown's formula of bouncy pop and gloopy love songs in the process. Even though the album was made in a drugged up haze, Gaye intuitively hit the zeitgeist bullseye on every track.
7. Exile On Main Street - The Rolling Stones. The band's first double album was recorded in an atmosphere of decadence of debauchery in the South of France at the turn of the 70's. It's a dirty melange of blues, boogie and prototype grunge rock. It includes the single "Tumbling Dice" and Keith Richards' finest solo moment, "Happy".
8. London Calling - The Clash. Recorded in London in 1979, the band's third studio album sounds like an apocalyptic calling card from the end of the universe. It's the sound of anger, hope and the redemptive power of music. Punk's finest moment - by far.
9. Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan. Released in 1966, it was the first double album from a major recording artist. It features Dylan's trademark aggression, sharp, poetic wit and also a healthy dose of surrealism. The feature cuts are "Rainy Day Women #12 and 35" and the beautiful "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands".
10. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd. Released in March 1973, this album quickly transcended music, and became a global cultural happening. It embraces a basket of concepts like madness, conflict, greed and the remorseless passage of time. It's not as psychedelic as earlier Floyd albums, and therefore more accessible to a broader audience. It is atmospheric, powerful, haunting and beautifully executed. Rock music at it's most thought provoking. And it sounds as contemporary today as it did in 1973.
Of course, once I'd read what I'd written above, I became acutely aware that there are a great many albums that other people would want to see included in this 'Top Ten'. I don't really know whether the albums I've name-checked are the best, but what I do know with some certainty is that much of what has followed since owes something, and in many cases, everything, to at least one of these great pieces of work.
