Journey Rocks the Road With Night Ranger, Foreigner

When Journey released Revelation in 2008, they not only appeared at number five on the Billboard Hot 200, they also earned their eleventh platinum album. The New York Times proclaimed "the band...feels alive." And that was even prior to the Journey renaissance fueled by the inclusion of "Don't Stop Believin'" in Broadway's Rock of Ages musical and on television's hit show Glee.
The band's keyboardist, Jonathan Cain, said his daughters assured him that placement was going to be huge: "Good for us and good for Glee. Glad they can get some mileage out of a song that's almost 30 years old now. Journey's sort of ageless in that sense. We're not like some old creeper band from the '80s with long hair that nobody cares about."
Cain saw it coming as soon as the reformed Journey started playing the tune again in 1998. He observed that "it was the one that always resonated with the kids, and they would always start charging the stage. I knew something was up. I didn't know how big it was going to get. It's kind of neat to see that side of it through their eyes, how the young generation perceives us."
Indeed, with their latest CD, Eclipse, Journey has a chance to really solidify that new generation of fans. The disc is set for release in North America on May 24 exclusively through Walmart. Europeans get their shot on June 3. Eclipse is the iconic band's 14th studio album and their second with lead vocalist Arnel Pineda (the band's sixth front man).
Of the new effort, lead guitarist and band founder Neal Schon declared, "I'm in love with this record, which I haven't said about one of our albums for a long time. It's a rock record and it sounds amazing."
Cain added that it's "a concept record with some spiritual themes to it... pretty tough, hard-hitting stuff. We just felt like it was time to send a message to the world about how we feel about life in general."
To support the release, Journey is hitting the road along with Night Ranger and Foreigner. And Schon is pretty excited: "We've got a lot of hits to play and there's plenty of time to do some new stuff too, so we're gonna mix it up. We haven't toured with Foreigner for over 10 years, so we're really looking forward to this run."
The run kicks off on July 15 in Wisconsin and wraps up on October 21 with Journey in Seattle. In between, they'll cover a large swath of North America.
Among the stops in the Northeast, Journey plays Mansfield, Mass. on August 12. Hartford, Conn. hosts Journey after that on August 25. Cincinnati, Virginia Beach, Charlotte, Hershey, and more round out the August itinerary.
For September, Journey hits West Palm Beach as well as New Orleans, Atlanta, Dallas, and Kansas City, among others. October puts the '80s rockers in cities like Mountain View, Portland, and Englewood.
In addition to North America, Journey also plans to first venture to other countries with Eclipse. Schon says that the band fashioned the record with touring in mind: "You know, I really fought for this record to be the way it is. It's a rock record. It's built for the places we're about to play. We're playing a lot of big shows - South America and Europe - and we're going to be touring the whole world on and off for two years. So I wrote for what I felt we were missing in our show."

Smithsonian Musical Treasures to Tour Through Five States

The Smithsonian is known to hold treasures from history and its musical treasures are indeed some of the most relevant to music history. Luckily for those within Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio and South Carolina, the Smithsonian is bringing a musical history tour called New Harmonies to those areas.
The tour hitting those five states is part of the Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street project. The project which debuts in March, showcases America's richest stories in music according to its director, Carol Harsh.
The tour will make stops in those five states at libraries, historical societies, and performance spaces in towns and small cities.
Some of the interesting things one might experience from the tour is to see musical instruments created from the innovations of poverty: a cigar box guitar; a Cajun rub board strummed with a bottle opener; and a diddley bow. Other instruments and historical musicians and songs will all be covered. The tour is one that is very hands on which makes it an attractive exhibit.
The tour will mix with local programs. For instance, at the debut of the exhibit on March 12 at the Asbury Park Public Library in Asbury Park, New Jersey, visitors will also be exposed to the Library's home collection of Bruce Springsteen.
Another example of the tour coming together with local music history is that when doing stops in the Mississippi area visitors will learn of the blues, with its African American roots, influenced jazz, rock, and rockabilly. The local music influence with French, Spanish, Creole and Jewish flavors will be explored as well.
The United States has a rich history and music is a part of that history. It is a wonderful opportunity that the Smithsonian program is bringing to the areas scheduled for stops of the tour. I used to be the type of actor who felt that I could simply walk into a space, take a few seconds to "get into character", and just launch myself into a brilliant, dramatic piece of acting.
Was I ever wrong!
One of the biggest stumbling blocks of novice (as well as veteran!) actors is the fact that many do not give themselves adequate time before an audition, rehearsal or performance to warm up their instruments. Now you may find it silly that I refer to an actor's "instruments". But if you really think about it, that is exactly what the body and mind of an actor is, an instrument!
For example: if an gymnastics squad is about to compete in a tournament, you had better believe that each individual member of the squad is going to warm-up both mentally and physically in preparation for the tournament. They need to fine tune their bodily "instruments" in order to be prepared for the difficult task ahead of them. But for the sake of argument, what could happen if one member of the squad did not?
* This gymnast's routine may suffer because their body was not adequately prepared to perform the necessary moves, and their score might drag down the overall score of the squad.
* The gymnast may be unprepared mentally, physically, or (most likely) both. Once the tournament starts, they may perform poorly because of a lack of mental focus and physical preparation.
This is just one obvious analogy. But the fact remains, an actor needs to warm-up just like an athlete would. Seems logical, right?
But as an actor, how do we take this knowledge and put it into practice to help us further our craft?
The answer to that question comes in three steps:
1. Analyze your tendencies
2. Release your habits
3. Incorporate character traits

For some actors (like myself) stretching plays a particularly important role in warm-ups. Whether you are playing a very physical character in a fight scene, or a very tender and loving romantic scene with little blocking, freedom from tension and rigidity is just as important for an actor as the lines you speak.
What we must remember, as performers, is that audience members can tell when we (the actor, NOT the character) are letting tension creep in and motivate our body and its movements. This is one of the easiest ways for an audience member to get taken out of the moment, and have difficulty believing your performance.
