What would happen if that guitarist didn't exist? You wouldn't be playing the guitar would you? Without inspiration, nothing would bring you to do it. You need to appreciate other musicians even if you don't like them. It's a value as part of being a guitarist.

You need to appreciate the guitar itself, because a guitar isn't easy to make. Even though Squier Strats aren't the best guitars out there, you still need to appreciate them. Guitars are more complex then you think they are.It takes many people, and resources to make a guitar. Southern Gospel Music - Most Influential Artists, Past and Present

In any genre of music, there are specific individuals that are considered the pioneers or those who transcend a musical generation. Southern Gospel music is no different. With its origins deeply rooted in the early 1900's based on Christian lyrics and backed by American early music styles such as bluegrass it has its own history of transcendent artists.
Considered one of the founders of Southern Gospel music James D. Vaughan was one of the original pioneers. Born 1864 in Tennessee James was a music teacher, a composer and a songbook publisher. In 1900, he started the James D. Vaughan music publishing company and the Vaughan school of music in 1911 where many gospel performers studied in the coming years. In the year previous 1910, he pioneered the concept of selling songbooks on the road when he assembled the first professional quartet and sent them on the road. Vaughan also founded one of the very first radio stations in Tennessee in 1922 that broadcast Southern Gospel music up until 1930. In addition, he founded Vaughan phonograph records, which is the first recording company in the south. It is easy to see why Vaughan is considered the pioneer of Southern Gospel music and why he was inducted into the southern Gospel music Hall of Fame in 1997.
You cannot speak about James D. Vaughan without mentioning Charles Davis Tillman. Tillman is also considered one of the pioneers of modern Southern Gospel music. Born 1861 in Alabama as the youngest son of a Baptist preacher, Tillman has been credited with integrating African-American spirituals into traditional Christian music. As a singer and composer, he was introduced to the spiritual "The Old-Time Religion" at a very young age where he wrote his own version and exposed it to the white churchgoers and southerners to this new type of sound. In doing so this blend of music eventually became known as Southern Gospel and influenced a generation of artists such as Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Tillman went on to write dozens of songs one of which being the most popular "Life's Railway to Heaven" that influenced generations. Tillman has been memorialized at the southern Gospel music Hall of Fame and the Gospel music Hall of Fame.
Carrying on the Southern music legacy are the Blackwood Brothers. Formed in 1934 with brothers Roy Blackwood, Doyle Blackwood, James Blackwood, and R.W Blackwood began singing together as a quartet. By 1940, they were already on the road selling songbooks and singing on the radio in Iowa. The quartet over the years has had many lineup changes of family members and non-family members but overall has been influential in the Southern Gospel music business for 76 years. They inspired generations of quartets that followed them such as the Kingsmen Quartet, the Statesmen Quartet and the Oak Ridge boys.
Some of the most influential Southern artists of modern day have over the years been comprised of such artists as Elvis Presley, the Oak Ridge boys to some of today's artists like Ernie Hasse & the signature sound. Over the many generations, there have been hundreds of Southern artists responsible for paving the way for the next generation and to mention some would mean missing more. The previously mentioned pioneers of the ones that started it all and they are legacy will inspire future artists as well.

Metallers Instanzia Show How Progressive Metal and Epic Metal Should Be Played

This melodic, progressive metal quartet, going by the name of Instanzia hail from the frozen and icy landscapes of Montreal, Quebec. Their sound is somewhat reminiscent of Rhapsody Of Fire and one time singer (DC Cooper) of melodic rockers Royal Hunt. Instanzia's style of progressive/melodic metal can be described as a fine mixture of finely refined epic proportions blended in with progressive influences to give an interesting character and charm to their music.
Singer Alexis Woodbury sings from his soul, with so much conviction and emotion, you can't help but feel his pain. Yes, this is for real, people, this is not your average run-of-the-mill heavy metal group.
Woodbury's solid harmonies and superb arrangements let the music breathe here as it does not sound so overbearing and achieves a tasteful balance among all eight tracks found on their debut CD, "Ghosts".
There is something about his vocals, which gives Instanzia's music so much depth and feeling you can immerse your ears into. Moreover, for those of you into heaviness, this album has tons of heavy guitar rhythms and double bass passages that'll make your head bang out of control. Now, if you prefer melodic riffs and articulately structured lead runs, you're in for one hell of a treat here. Their solos are breathtaking to a certain degree (nothing like virtuoso guitarists Yngwie Malmsteen or Paul Gilbert), and will definitely throw your auditory senses in for a cool tailspin. This is something your ear drums will dance and beat to, so prepare to experience some of the best progressive and melodic metal to come from Canadian shores in a long while.
In addition, to their unique musicianship and interesting song arrangements, their album art, of course, ridden with "Ghosts" will send chills down your spine as well. With almost one hours worth of music on this disc, you're not going to be disappointed especially if you love groups like Dream Theater, Savatage, Iced Earth, Firewind, Judas Priest, and even early Metallica too.
Personally, I was very impressed with this young band's first studio outing, and the future only seems very, very promising for this Canadian heavy, progressive metal foursome.
Here are the eight songs featured on this CD: "Omen", "Ghosts Of The Past", "Power Of The Mind", "Charmin Deceiver", "Heaven Hell", "A Genius Who Believes", "The Key" and "The Desert Fox."
My favorite of all eight numbers featured here is "A Genius Who Believes" with its head banging rhythms intertwined with majestic synthesizer episodes and vocals that'll take you back to your dark past - yes this song is eerie but it is one of the stand out tracks here. "Ghosts" is an excellent release and should not be passed up as it will rock your world.

Gilbert O'Sullivan Lyrics - The Most Melancholy Of Them All

Born Raymond O'Sullivan in Waterford, Eire in December 1946, Gilbert O'Sullivan became one of the leading singer songwriters of the early seventies, under the stern guidance of Tom Jones' manager Gordon Mills - the man he was to successfully sue in later years, in a major dispute over Mills' record company's royalty payments.
Gilbert O'Sullivan has been largely ignored by most pop music critics; his early image perhaps alienating a sizable portion of them with its contrived, down-at-heel urchin look. It didn't get much better when he soon decided to adopt preppy, American college boy garb with a garish jumper bearing the large letter "G" on the front - not a fashion statement that has stood the test of time.
What has stood the test of time in my view is the quality of some of his songwriting, along with the clean and natural vocal style he employed. Whilst he regularly managed to construct and carry a strong melody, it is the lyrics to some of his early work that I find fascinating.
His first major hit in 1970, Nothing Rhymed, set the tone for much of his writing over the next couple of years. Resolutely melancholic, there seemed to be a hint of Charlie Chaplin-like pathos lurking around every line:
'When I'm drinking my Bonaparte shandy, eating more than enough apple pies
Would I stare at my screen and see real human beings, starve to death right in front of my eyes?'
This is surpassed by the lyrics to the song that broke him internationally, Alone Again (Naturally). The record was a number one chart hit in the US, Canada and Japan and reached number three in the UK. It can be conservatively described as resolutely downbeat. Even the ubiquitous Steven Morrissey from The Smiths might struggle to articulate such despair
'And at sixty-five years old - my mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand why the only man she had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken - despite encouragement from me, no words were ever spoken
And when she passed away, I cried and cried all day - alone again, naturally'
Over the next couple of years, O'Sullivan seemed content to flourish at the more throwaway end of the pop spectrum, with such lightweight hits as Matrimony, Ooo-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day and Get Down, light years from the harsh depictions of reality embedded in his earlier work. Alone Again (Naturally) is, to me, the most melancholy of all Gilbert O'Sullivan lyrics, and his finest pop moment.

DVD Review: AC/DC Live At River Plate

In my opinion, and I stress it is only an opinion, with If You Want Blood You Got Itand Live at Donington, AC/DC have contributed two of greatest live albums ever released. I rarely listen to their studio work anymore as I find myself gravitating toward their live output, attracted as I am by the sheer rawness of the music and the energy that is blatantly apparent from the salivating hordes in the crowd.
So, when I first saw the advert for Live at River Plate I let out a tiny yelp of excitement and maybe, just maybe, soiled my pants a wee bit.
However, the danger is that such expectation inevitably leads to a let down; like when you finally get that girl from school to show what's hidden underneath and all you find is a stress-ball with the words 'don't worry, be happy' written on it.
Worry ye not rockers for Live at River Plate is almost without fault.
River Plate is the name commonly given to the Estadio Monumental [Monumental Stadium] in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires - an aptly named venue. There, in bowels of the cavernous arena which looks like the ancient Roman coliseum, AC/DC played three nights and to almost 200,000 fans as part of their 2008-10 Black Ice Tour. It was their first trip to the country since 1996 and in the DVD extras the feeling of excitement comes leaping out of the screen from some of the fans interviewed in the lead up to the gigs.
The DVD content was filmed over nine gruelling, logistic heavy days. In the extras we are given an insight into how an operation of this scale is put together. But this is just an interesting addendum to the main course, the gig itself.
Never ones to be thrifty on content, the DVD contains 19 songs over two hours. It features classics such asThunderstruck, Whole Lotta Rosie and Let There Be Rock, as well as a few tracks from the most recent album as is traditional with AC/DC tours.
They open with the quite outstanding Rock N Roll Train, which itself follows a graphic cartoon featuring Angus taking a train on a death ride to Hell. I vaguely recall seeing that through a beer-fuelled haze at Hampden in 2009. To help the nigh-on 5 million people who saw the Black Ice tour recall this animated opening the DVD extras include it in its entirety.
Thereafter the band rip and roar their way through a set of classic songs. Angus is imperious in his role as pseudo-frontman and Brian Johnson smiles as he grinds the microphone into submission with his unique vocal screech. His happiness is most likely borne out of his delight at being the frontman for quite possibly the greatest rock and roll band in history.
Anyone who is even mildly intimate with AC/DC knows what to expect. There are no alternative versions or acoustic sets to slow things down a bit - that's what The Jack is for. It is Rock all the way, except when Roll gets its face in the picture. The Gibson SG and distortion pedal are switched on and left on throughout. And boy do the fans love it.
Watching the DVD brings goosebumps as memories of past AC/DC gigs flood back. However, I don't think I have seen many bounces like the one which ensues during the penultimate song, Highway To Hell. There were nearly 70,000 people in attendance each night and every one of them must have had sore feet the morning after.
