Washburn Guitars have effectively been making guitars since 1964. Pop Music - What Is the Definition?

Trying to fit contemporary music into neat little niches and categories is an almost impossible task. You could argue that some musicians can be clearly defined as being country while others are most certainly rap. However, what about the term "pop music"?
Should you take the time to learn the meaning of the word, you will probably be very surprised. The term pop music according to a number of sources (dictionaries included) defines pop music as being a type of music that has wide appeal. If that were the case then rap, country and rock would all fall into this genre at some point. Many music experts and people directly involved in the industry use the "pop" as a shortened version of the word popular.
If the term pop music is, as many people suggest, interchangeable with the phrase "top 40" then the list would change significantly according to who conducted the poll and the year that it was done. The list would also vary drastically according to region, city and country. The people who were asked to take the poll would certainly cause the poll to change.
A clear example would be to poll 200 people in the city between the ages of 15 and 20 and ask them what their top five favorite songs were. If you asked 200 people living in the same city, the same question, but they were all between the age of 35 and 40 the lists would be completely different. If you went back to that same city five years later and asked the question using the same age groups, the list would have altered again.
Using these exact same parameters, what would happen if you did the survey in three different cities? What would happen if you asked the question in London, New York and Nashville? It is doubtful that the lists would be even remotely similar.
What is "pop music"? If you asked this question to a hundred people of all different ages, backgrounds and cultures the answer would be different from each person.
There really does not seem to be a clear definition of what pop music is. People reading this might arguably contend that pop music is - music that is on the radio and has commercial appeal to anyone under the age of twenty. To counter this one could simply ask them what city they lived in? What is commercially appealing to a teen in the Midwest might not have any interest to one who lives in New York or to one in Sweden.
Ask them what radio station they listen to. If they are listening to a "country station", you might ask them if they thought that the music they were listening to had a wide appeal. There can certainly be no denying the commercial value of county singers like George Strait. He has sold over 68 million albums in the United States alone. Translate that into actual dollars and then figure in tours, royalties and other spin offs. You might even dare to ask the person how old they were when they started listening to his music. George really achieved success in 1981 and many of his fans were in their teens to early twenties.
Is George Strait a pop music star? According to the definition provided by the country listener the answer would be yes.
What is pop music? The term has too many meanings to have a clear and concise definition. Its interpretations are as different as the music it is trying to define.

It's a bit louder than reggae and may be a bit faster as well but some funky songs will still be an appropriate electric dance accompaniment. Funk is an African-inspired type of music and includes complex grooves that give you this feeling of wanting to dance longer. Funk is nice for group dancing, pairs or even mass dancing. This is another reason why it's perfect for your electric dance moves.
Cameo's Candy is a famous electric song in the UK. The beating is somewhat similar to reggae, except for some variations and robotic rhythms. However, the music tempo and speed are almost just as fast as most reggae songs so it would be good for any electric dance steps.
Pop and RnB are the next best choices for electric dance but focus on the ones with happy beats. As you probably now, not all pop or rnb songs are considered happy. Many of them are sentimental and it would be funny to use it as you do the electric slide. It's comical! In all honesty, you are not necessarily limited to these four genres if you're looking for good electric songs. What's important is that it matches your dance steps and it maintains a happy beat. Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson: A Woman Who Rocks

The Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, continues her hot streak. She's been all over the press since before the January, 2011 release of her latest CD The Party Ain't Over which was produced by the everywhere man Jack White. She'd been recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received an Early Influence award.

And Jackson fits right in. After all, she broke the mold for female singers in the 50s. No one had heard a "girl" sing like she did. If Lady GaGa thinks she has the corner on raw sexuality, she's dead wrong! Jackson brought the same type of "dangerous" sensuality to her music that Elvis did and she did it about 40 years before GaGa was born. And she did it with a lot more taste and class in my not-so-humble opinion. GaGa's nothing new, she's just more explicit. Jackson...now she was new!
"It's like they just got their heads together and said, 'We will not help this girl do it,'" Jackson says of the men who controlled the record business of the 50s. "They just wouldn't play my records if it was the rock stuff. So it didn't take long before I was putting a country song on one side of a record and a rock song on the other."
That probably worked in Jackson's favor in a way since country music was her home for many years and she had decent success with some great country songs. She also went on to record lots of gospel music. But it's the rock and roll that she's remembered for now. Her early rockabilly releases have become iconic classics of the genre.
She could throw her voice from sweet to gravelly in mid lyric and she still does today at 73 years old. As a teenager she was a powerful performer who turned heads not only because she was beautiful to look at, but because she created a beautiful package of sight and sound. And she pushed boundaries with glamor, style, and attitude.
As a septuagenarian, she is still a powerful performer. She seems tireless and has been keeping up a heavy touring schedule since the release of her new record. She seems to be everywhere. She is still a superwoman of rock and roll. No doubt about it: Jackson is indeed A Woman Who Rocks!
