Lastly, you wouldn't want anything horrible to ruin the fun for the night. Thus, remember to travel in groups or have your parents send you as close as possible to the concert venue, don't accept anything from strangers and I know that you might be curious, but if you're under the legal drinking age, do not consume any spirits or you'll be in trouble with the law.

Christian Wolff Concert Review 4-7-11 at UVA

Christian Wolff is an experimental and classical music composer who was largely self-taught in his musical education. This being said, there are relatively few "traditional" compositional paradigms which he adheres to; creating both a unique and jarring listening experience for the audience. Immediately upon the outset of the concert, his novel approach is blatantly obvious with songs that provide the performer an incredible amount of freedom - so much to the point that not any two interpretations of the same piece are performed, or heard for that matter, in the same way. A manner to approach the music in, from the perspective of a nubile experimental music listener (such as I am), would be strictly avant-garde. As with any pioneering music composer, the music has an exploratory tone to it; there is a palpable pushing and feeling around for boundaries that do not exist.
Periods of silence marked by brief outbursts, both identifiable in source and otherwise, followed by more traditional classical feeling sounds, are all common in the work of Wolff. Certain compositions, such as Play (1968) or Stones (1968) are completely unstructured, providing both performers and listeners with an abundance of freedom that can be overwhelming to those who have little experience with the world of early experimental music. At the same time, there is, paradoxically enough, a very natural feel to many of the compositions that is somewhat soothing to the audience, despite the abruptness of the pieces.
Although what I have been saying about the concert appears to go back and forth between the extremes of musically jarring and oddly comfortable, these, it appears, are entirely appropriate sensation combinations when listening to experimental compositions. In fact, there is an air uncertainty about the performers, looking about from one to another, which helps put the audience at ease with their own internal clashing of feelings and interpretations about the compositions.
The influence of his contemporaries is apparent in his compositions. The open form of Paris (1968) seems to be inspired by Earle Brown. The freely floating, unfocused, and asymmetric rhythms of Morton Feldman as appear to have entered Wolff's compositions. In all of Wolff's works, the autonomy of interpretation associated with John Cage could be felt along with other avant-garde influences from the experimental New York School, of which they all were an integral part.
Influences from abroad are also apparent, as Wolff borrows from the electroacoustic styling of the French based GRM. More specifically, Play (1968) had the influence of Pierre Schaeffer and musique concrete - as the sound was based off many unidentifiable, nontraditional "instruments" and the piece was devoid of any traditional musical elements. Despite the fact that Wolff is not associated with the minimalist musical movement, I could not help but hear some elements of the movement in his music - silence, brevity, directionless or non-goal driven, conceptual aspects. Also, as a matter of statement, although electronic aspects are frequent in experimental pieces, there was a marked absence of those sounds at this concert.

Great Moments In Opera, The Conclusion To Wagner's "Tristan And Isolde"

It is the third and final act of "Tristan And Isolde" that we find Tristan in his castle at Kareol in Brittany. Tristan has been wounded in a fight with Melot, whom he basically for some unknown reason provoked in to a sword fight to simply not defend himself. As Melot trust his sword in to his stomach area. Tristan is badly wounded. This being clear from the heavy bandages he wears and the blood which can be seen in area where he was struck yet Tristan is more depressed than physically injured. It is however as Tristan receives news that Isolde is on her way that he rejoices and asks if her ship has been sighted yet only a gloomy tune is heard from the shepherd's pipe.
It is however after sometime that the shepherd's tune signals the arrival of Isolda's ship which prompts Kurwenal to leave Tristan in order that he might greet her. Tristan, once left alone begins to inexplicably remove the bandages from his wound which were preventing it from hemorrhaging further. Tristan frantically removing the very bandages which in fact were preventing him from bleeding to death. This being a point in which the music increases in exhilaration as the dramatic conclusion to our story begins. Isolde makes her way to Tristan, who is on the verge of dying yet just as is he is about to depart from this earth he sees Isolde; who rushes to his side. Isolde's emotions showing as she holds Tristan in her arms, who is ever close to death and as the two spend their last moment, they seem to share a certain joy. As if knowing that it is all over for them, for they do not see this as an ending but a new beginning. It perhaps being in another life or world that they are bound to meet again.
It also while Tristan and Isolde are spending their last moments or at least those in the world we know that Isolde's soprano voice is heard singing "Liebestod" (love is dead). Isolde, ever a lovely lady of passion with bright hair a crimson, flowing down the length of her body and with sadness to heighten her beauty even beyond what we had seen; sings this haunting melody of love. It being as if she is saying that to this is what their love has led her and Tristan to and as she starts to slowly die with Tristan, the music increases in tension of romance and sacrifice to love. It not even being clear what exactly is causing Isolde to die yet it is as if this did not matter. For it might simply be the lack of will to live without Tristan or perhaps simply the will that she in hope might join him wherever it is he is venturing to; in his journey beyond the life which he has known up till this point. "Liebestod" being a most tender moment in any tragic opera which in the typically Wagnerian style holds certain elements of even being triumphant.


Marke, the king (Tristan's uncle who also happens to be Isolde's husband) arrives shortly after Isolde, with peaceful intensions. Marke claiming that he has been made fully aware of the love potion which was used on the two of them yet his arrival only adds to the tragedy. It being Kurwenal, (Tristan's loyal friend) who in his believe that Marke and Melot have come to kill Tristan engages Melot in a fight in which both men are killed. Brangäne, (Isolde's faithful lady in waiting) also having arrived sees Isolde die while Marke grieves the death of his friend as he explains that Brangäne has told him of the love potion. All which making it clear to him that there had never been any intention from their part to betray him and he is not only not opposed to their union but wishes it for them; that they might live in joy yet sees that it is too late. "Warum Isolde, warum mir das?" claiming Marke's sentiments as the opera comes to an end with Isolde's "Liebestod".
In conclusion, I would say that "Tristan And Isolde" offers one of the most dramatic endings in tragic opera in which again we see that it was just a matter of timing that made this ending sad which did not necessarily have to be as such.

Rockabilly Music: Why It Still Matters

I've written a lot of articles recently on the topic of rockabilly. Throughout the past couple of months I've forced myself to think about the music, to learn about the music, to feel the music, to hear the music, and to write about the music. Why? What would prompt me to spend so much of my time putting all these thoughts together about a genre of music that had its fleeting moment of glory for a few short years almost 60 years ago and was all but forgotten as quickly as it burst upon the music scene? Good question.
The past several weeks have been a journey into the pages of rockabilly music history. I'd expected that. But it's been much more than that. It's been a journey into the very heart of rock and roll music itself. Rockabilly was a seemingly simple form of music. I've written about how it found its roots in the blues, country music, rhythm and blues music, and gospel music of the first half of the past century. But those roots carried more than music into the people of the 1950s. It carried the seeds of a new revolution in music unlike any that had ever taken place before.
Rockabilly music wasn't really all that inventive. It was simply cumulative. It was the mixing of all those ingredients into something that used bits of each of them to create something different from all of them. It used simple, standard blues musical progressions. Its guitarists played familiar country-styled instruments and parts. Its vocalists tapped into the gospel songs they'd learned as children. Its drum-and-bass rhythm sections were transported directly from the black rhythm and blues bands of the late 1940s and early 1950s.
It was really no different in its parts and pieces than so much of the music that came before it. But there was something about the whole when each of these pieces was combined into one. The whole was different. Very, very different.
Rockabilly was somehow able to transcend the boundaries of pop, country, and R&B music charts for the first time topping all three of them with one song by one artist. In doing so, it proved to be capable of transcending the color barrier that kept whites and their music almost completely separate from blacks and theirs. Rockabilly threw in dashes of each and stirred the pot until they were so thoroughly mixed that they could never again be separated. From that point on, black and white musicians would play for and be loved by black and white fans alike. Rockabilly music played a huge role in opening those doors and breaking down the barriers.
The themes of most rockabilly songs were not deep. "But if you mess with my ducktails you'd better stop" and "uh-uh honey, lay offa them shoes" were not exactly introspective lyrics. But nonetheless they touched the hearts and souls of a generation of music fans who were starving for something more meaningful than the question, "how much is that doggie in the window?" Rockabilly lyrics didn't have to be deep. The music did all the grabbing that was needed. It moved people. It made people happy.
And rockabilly set the stage for countless bands and an incredibly wide variety of music that came after it. It's where The Beatles and hundreds of other bands learned how to play music. It's where modern rock and roll performers learned how to act on stage. It's where we come from musically. That's why we need to remember it. That's why it needs to be kept alive. That's why it still matters. And that's why I love rockabilly music.

In was during 1960 when a band from Liverpool became commercially successful and also were the most critically acclaimed acts in history. There sound was quite the same as many other during their early years, but they would go on working with several types of sound from rock and roll to pop ballads and even psychedelic rock as well as many more.
The Beatles made one of their first national tours in London in 1963 with a show that took place in Bradford. The tour was then used as their opportunity to generate their type of sound and style, which would finally lead them to becoming one great band to ever become part this kind of industry.
To many there are five top icons of all time who took a spot in history, such as Michael Jackson, who made his start in this business when he began singing along with his brother as the Jackson Five. The Beatles of coarse went on to become more than a household name. But one of the most successful bands ever.
Leslie Cheung, was looked at as the founding fathers of Canto pop and also had a successful film and music career. Elvis Presley who became one of the most popular American singers during the twentieth century. And Bob Marley, who was a Jamaican song writer and singer.

How To Buy Your New Guitar

Ok, so you want to learn how to play the guitar, or you want your kids to learn how to play. The problem is you don't own a guitar, so you will need to buy one. The following will tell you what to look for in a good quality guitar without breaking the bank.
So how do you buy a guitar? Well there's a right way and a wrong way. The wrong way is to just buy the first guitar you see when you're inexperienced and don't know what to look for. Lets say you're buying a guitar for your 5 year old son because you want him to become a rock star; Right? Good luck with that!
If you go and buy a 5 year old kid a full-sized guitar it would be the same as giving him a String Bass or an Upright Bass that stands about 6' high. In other words, he /she would need a chair in order to play it. Even a full-sized guitar would dwarf him, as he is still developing. A better choice would be a concert size or ½ size guitar these small guitars are specially made for kids in the 3-6 year old range. For the 6-10 year olds, a ¾ size guitar would be appropriate. Above 10 years of age, go with the full size guitar. These are just some guidelines. There are a lot of other factors to consider.
Will your 4 or 5 year old son or daughter even want to play the guitar? Remember there are a lot of other activities going on in their lives, such as playing sports, playing with friends, and video games etc. Will they still want to play the guitar once their finger tips start to hurt from pushing down the steel strings on the guitar fret board? This is one of the major reasons why children and beginner guitarists quit playing so soon. It's a major guitar complaint..."My Fingers Hurt!" This is probably the number #1 complaint in the top 10 list of reasons for quitting the guitar soon after starting. But fear not, as there are ways around this problem.
Generally, when a beginner is learning there is always going to be a certain amount of finger discomfort no matter what type of guitar you buy. It's just the nature of the beast.
A good work around for this problem is to buy a classical guitar. The strings are made of nylon, and the tension on the strings is less than the tension typical of steel strings acoustic guitars. Less tension and softer strings equals less pain on the fingers.
The down side of course is kids tend to think classical guitars aren't as cool as an electric. However, manufacturers are making very cool cutaway nylon acoustics. These guitars have part of the body "cut away" so that you can easily play higher up the neck. Other guitar models come with built-in pick-ups, and equalizers. How cool is that? Another advantage is they also come in ½ sizes thereby solving the sore finger problem.
You may have a young daughter who wants to learn guitar, but doesn't like the look or style of all the macho male electric guitars out there. Fret not, as there is a guitar manufacturing Co. Called "Daisy Guitars." They specialize in making guitars specifically for the female gender. They have a wide array of shades more subtle colours, and body shapes in their guitar selection. Check them out!
Good action on a guitar means it plays real easy and nice. The strings are nice and low above the frets and there is no string buzz anywhere along the neck when you press the strings down. A cheap guitar won't stay in tune, as the result of low quality tuning pegs that will be difficult to turn. The strings may be set so high above the fret board that you just about have to stand on them to play it. Obviously this isn't what we want.
A Cautionary Word:
If you buy a solid body electric guitar you have to buy a guitar amplifier, as you won't be able to hear it very well without amplification. Guitar companies such as Fender and Peavey package beginner electric guitars and amplifiers together, so you don't have to decide what amp goes with the guitar you purchased, as they do it for you.
If you purchase a hollow body acoustic guitar, you'll be able to hear it, but if you want to amplify it, you will need to buy a guitar amplifier and external pick-up, that fits your acoustic guitar.
Keep in mind that there are many quality guitar manufacturers such as, Paul Reed Smith, Gibson, Fender, Martin, etc. However, the real high quality guitars can cost big bucks.
The more reasonable lower end guitar brands like Yamaha, Jackson, Cort, Seagull, and Simon Patrick, etc. have models targeted toward beginners and those budget conscious guitar shoppers. Professional music stores will absolutely amaze you with the variety of choice and selection they will have on the floor for you to try. The sales people tend to be knowledgeable and if not too busy - helpful.
The choice is up to you. Do you want to have your head blown off by a kid practising with an electric guitar and amp? (Trust me on this...I guarantee the kid will want to see how loud the amplifier can go, so plan on a special sound proof room, or get a real good pair of ear plugs.) The alternative is to get him/her a classical guitar. It's your decision.

Electric Slide

Frankly, I don't know anyone who didn't dance Electric Slide in weddings or any public gatherings for that matter. If you think seeing this dance being done and performed in parties around the world is uncanny, then you must have lived somewhere out of the planet. Electric Slide is a popular dance invented by Ric Silver, an American choreographer, in 1976.
Electric slide is particularly popular in celebrations which involve a crowd of people simply because it's more fun to do it with a whole bunch of amateur dancers. What usually happens when someone initiates to do the dance is that the crowd would line up in either triangles or squares and do the electric dance simultaneously - like the thing you do when you dance Michael Jackson's Thriller!
Electric Dance is best done in smooth floor - nothing too shiny - or hardwood. This is because the dance consists of some twists and turns that may be hard to do if you're dancing on the ground with tall grasses or on an oil-shiny marble floor. You may also find it difficult to do the dance with furry carpet. But most people don't really mind that. In parties, we danced on what's available! People even dance it in the pool!
Why is Electric Slide Very Popular?
In all honestly, I have asked the same thing. I first saw this dance when I was struggling in my puberty years but never knew why adults love dancing it on weddings. I came to the conclusion that it's probably a part of wedding traditions. In a way, it does seem like a traditional dance on weddings. As soon as the music starts and people begin forming a crowd on the ballroom, you know what's next - electric dance showdown! Still, I never understood why they love it until I was on my teenage years when I actually get to dance it for the first time.
I find the dance steps very simple and easy to learn. I realized that was probably the reason why even grandpa participates during the dance. Also, the dancing is not restrictive and you could do a lot of variations with it - which I believe, is why even professional dancers like the electric dance because they can experiment on it and integrate additional innovative variations on their own.
The dance is usually accompanied by the song "Electric Boogie" by Marcia Griffiths. If not, it could well fit many reggae and slow pop songs.

Headphones
One really important component that anyone with an electronic drum set should have is a good pair of headphones. One of the best features of having the drums is that you can play them without making a lot of noise and disturbing your neighbors or roommates. However, if you want to drum quietly and still hear what you are playing, you'll need to plug in some good headphones. This will also allow you to listen to tracks while you play. It needs to be able to reproduce the high, mid and low range sounds so that you get an accurate representation of the music. Cases
If you are going to move your drums at all, you'll need some good drum cases. Chances are you spent a lot of money on your electric drums, so spending a little more to ensure they're well protected is a very good idea. It's especially important if you plan on touring or going on the road. All the jostling around can reek havoc on your drums if you don't secure them in a good case. When purchasing your cases, it's a good idea to have a couple different ones so that you can keep each component separate and secure. You have the choice of either soft or hard cases. Soft cases are good for people with little storage space who don't plan on touring. However, the hard cases are much better for the road and will keep your drums in pristine condition. 'The Grudge' is an awesome song by 'Tool.' It's simply amazing. The lyrics again proves that Maynard James Keenan is a true genius. They say music is the highest level of enlightenment and Maynard surely comes very close in this regard. I see an utterly charming and charismatic philosopher in Maynard James Keenan.
The Grudge is a simple and straightforward song. But the depth of the song is enormous. You can extract so much out of it. The song is about the grudges that we all hold within us. It's about the grudges that we deliberately hold inside, and it's also about the latent grudges that we are unaware of.
At the start of the song Maynard asks us to embrace our grudges. The song tells us to carefully calculate the things that we should tolerate and the things that we must not tolerate. Maynard basically ignites the instinctive urge amongst us to control everything. It's an urge that we all carry within ourselves consciously or subconsciously. He actually tells us to use our grudges as a weapon. He tells us to control everything by using our grudge as an effective instrument. It's Maynard's way of preaching that you have to embrace your negative side in order to bring out the positives. But the fun part is, Maynard actually composed this whole start in the wrapper of reverse psychology. He reveals it in the ending half of the song.
Maynard makes reference to Saturn in this song. In fact, he puts quite a lot of emphasis in his referral of Saturn. In Greek mythology, Saturn was the god of all the gods. But Saturn was so egoistic and so insecure that he ate all his children because he was afraid that he could have been overthrown by them. Saturn did a grave mistake though. He did not take Zeus into account. And ultimately, it was none but Zeus who rose up against Saturn, dethroned and killed him in the process. The relation of the story to this song is that, Saturn held and embraced the grudge inside him and applied it almost aptly enough. But what Saturn was unaware of was the damage that had been done to him intrinsically. He only realized it when Zeus brought him to death, but it was already too late. And there goes the message of the song.
After proving his point of the scathe of the grudge, Maynard asks us to let it go in the end. He urges us to transmute our leaden grudges into gold.
I'll interpret it as an alternate way of telling us to turn our greatest weakness into our greatest strength.

REVIEW: Biffy Clyro "Only Revolutions"

First impressions about this band entered my mind before I even had the chance to check out this disc. Is this a solo artist? Is it a strange name? What is a Biffy Clyro, exactly? The only thing I knew about this band before I heard the first note was that they were from Scotland and they won a Best Live Band award from New Music Express (NME). I have several friends who are really into british music and had suggested I take a listen to see if I might like it.
The opening track is "The Captain". Within the first four bars of the song, I'm hooked. Immediately, I ponder if this is what they listen to at soccer matches in Europe. The lyrics and chorus are very anthemic. There's a quality to this song that invites any and everyone to sing-a-long. There's a kaleidoscopic vibe going with the keyboards, some lush bass licks and the singer's voice is thick with all things Scottish.
So now, while I'm enjoying this song, it opens up an even bigger array of questions. How many people are in this band? Is the whole album as good as the opening track? How do these guys pull off this music live? Can they recreate this in a live environment? The NME award immediately gives these guys street credentials, so I know they can carry a tune to a crowd.
"That Golden Rule" is the next song and its much faster than the intro. The guitar work is rapid fire, yet gets quiet during the verses. When the entire band is going full steam, it's a thunderous engine roaring. The reason this band appeals to my musical tastes is because they are using interesting guitar patterns, thought provoking lyrics and they are very keen to mix up their instrumentation and layering.
To think that this band is able to emit these lush sounds as just a trio is staggering. I'm hearing a wide variety of influences from Rush to hints of Muse. The start and stop antics of the band really help create the moods as you dig further into this album. Foo Fighters tapped these guys to open up for them on their new tour and in typical Dave Grohl fashion, they hit a bullseye.
Biffy Clyro is a band that we're going to be hearing about in future years. They've been touring in support of this record for several years and are just now getting some much needed publicity in the States. They've toured here with Cage The Elephant and are now playing to thousands with Foo Fighters and Motorhead. Without major radio airplay, they have their work cut out for them. If this band is going to break in the United States without a major radio push, it would be easier to do this now more than ever.
This band is not a one-trick pony. They bring a lot to the table that most bands ignore. Their musicianship is stellar and the way they interact with each other and the audience helps them cut their own niche as a people's type of band. I enjoy this band and this record for the "underdog" quality of it. These are fantastic songs that I never would have heard had my friends not badgered me about it. This is a rock record, make no doubt about it. But, this just isn't a typical record. They treat their listeners with respect and challenge with non-traditional styles of songcrafting. These songs aren't your typical 4/4-in-the-box variety. They push the envelope and treat us as forward thinkers with this album. If you like a good rock record and are looking for something new, this is your album.

As electronic music continues to surge in popularity with a revival of the sounds of the eighties and nineties from a plethora of new bands and production teams, the music industry is responding by launching new ranges of electronic keyboards from big names in the music industry. Companies like Roland, Korg and Yamaha are applying advances in technology to deliver a whole range of synthesized vintage and retro sounds in high quality instruments with organic playability, stable electronics and USB and audio interfaces.

The appropriately named Korg Kronos synthesizer workstation is truly a leader in the field as it offers more than similar keyboards but at an affordable price. Korg have aimed to cover three areas with the launch of Kronos; Live, Production and Sound Design. Those using the Kronos for live performance will find a familiar program and combi layout with nine synth engines and a unique set list for compiling sounds. In production the 16-track sequencer and 16-track audio recorder together with analogue audio inputs for recording or sampling direct to the internal 300GB hard drive make the Kronos a user-friendly piece of studio kit. The aforementioned synth engines plus wave sequencing and vector synthesis put a large tick in the sound design box. Korg employed industry icons to program onboard sounds for the Kronos and it shows.
For a professional but affordable option it is hard to beat Yamaha's MOX6 and MOX8 synthesizer workstations. Internally they both offer the musician the same package. Externally the MOX6 has a 61-note semi-weighted keyboard, while the MOX8 has an 88-note fully weighted graded hammer action keyboard for an authentic piano feel. Both of the instruments are flexible and versatile, integrating with other audio sources and forming a complete package for beginners and professionals alike.
The electronic keyboard market is certainly very dynamic at present, producing product to meet demand for both the synth led electronic music revival and the newer computer-based music production market. Aside from the fact that the keyboard and synthesizer have long since played a major role in electronic acts from the Human League to the The Chemical Brothers and beyond, the keyboard now has just as important a role at the forefront of the traditional rock band as well as the electric guitar, which makes keyboard players the new rock and roll stars. Electronic keyboard manufacturers have certainly stepped up to the challenge and musicians now have access to a whole range of new and retro sounds in a range of high quality instruments.

Becoming an actor is a wonderful task and many people pursuing this find more than they had hoped for within themselves. It is this knowledge of the emotional world that enables the actor to show truth in a way that the audience has no other choice than feeling the same emotions portrayed on screen.
To learn this the actor must have a coach or mentor that helps him explore these emotional worlds in a way that will be different for every single actor.
A general approach in acting class is only possible for technical skills such as voice work or bodywork although even in these areas the actor must always be seen individually as in some cases new approaches have to be found to develop specific openings in specific actors.
We love actors that are different, that stick out, that have something special about them. Yet in acting class we seem to have a complete different outcome and try to standardize actors so they all look the same and talk the same and follow the same technique. Actors must understand that following the crowd is something you can do in a football stadium but not in an acting career. In fact the more you do different than the huge amount of actors out there the more chances you have to stick out and make it in this business where competition seems so massive. In reality there is not much serious competition because most actors are just waiting for a job instead of pursuing a career. That's why most of them are waiters. They are literally "waiting" (tables).
In group acting class it is very important to bring out the individual strength of the actors so they can also experience the magic of the ensemble. As in a film where every role has a different task and is an important part of the whole story the actor has to fulfill a specific part in acting class. As in life, we all have different parts to play.
As acting is not a craft like carpenter there are no exact skills or techniques. There are many so called acting techniques but none of them is really specific enough to enable an average person to become an actor just by following the manual. It is always a long journey of trial and error and figuring things out. The main task is to work on material on an ongoing basis, rehearsing roles, developing characters, working on speech and movement. An actor has to be able to do whatever it takes to fit into the character. There is more work to do than just memorizing lines and hoping ideas will come up on set. In most movies we show a couple of days in the life of a character, yet the actors job is to design the complete life of that character so the audience sees a complete person instead of just a glimpse of a person. The character needs a history, a life, past relationships, mistakes, challenges, things that are secret and things that he or she wishes for. The broader we paint that picture the better it is. The actor has to be willing to dive into the life of that character with all he got, merging his soul with the soul of the character to create a masterful performance.
So the journey of acting never stops as every new role, every new character has new challenges ready for the actor. It is an ongoing process of growth and improvement and therefore a wonderful thing to pursue, a life full of miracles if you are ready to dig deep and work as much as possible on yourself and the character.
Acting will change your life and make it even more worth living.
