For Rockabilly Fans, Some Acts Are Mandatory Listening

Rockabilly music spanned a surprisingly wide range of styles. Some acts were more country and others more blues. Some were characteristically wild while others were a bit more polished. So which acts really define the genre? Of all the acts that made rockabilly music throughout the mid to late 1950s, there are a few that really have to be considered mandatory listening for fans of rockabilly music.

1. Elvis Presley: Naturally, you have to count the King among those that you really need to be familiar with if you want to know rockabilly music. Rockabilly sprung up from many sources, so in my opinion, you can't really say that Elvis alone "started" it all. But he certainly started a branch of the genre and there's no doubt that he catapulted it to incredible heights of fame.
2. Carl Perkins: Along with many others, I call Perkins the "Godfather of Rockabilly." Carl didn't have Elvis' incredible magnitude and sheer force of presence, but he may have actually been the more talented total musician of the two. The songs he wrote really cemented the tone for the genre and his influence on guitar players that came after him is undeniable. His only smash hit, "Blue Suede Shoes," might be the most perfect rockabilly song ever written and was the first song to hit the top five in each of the pop, country, and Rhythm and Blues charts. It was also the first gold record for Sun Records for which he and Elvis both recorded in the early years.
3. Wanda Jackson: The tiny lady with the growly voice, Jackson holds the title of "Queen of Rockabilly." Her departure from the cowgirl outfits that other women performers tended to wear to sensually-glamorous dresses set a new standard for female performers as did her attitude which was brimming with confidence and mischief. Jackson's early rockabilly numbers are classics of the genre.
4. The Burnette Brothers Rock and Roll Trio: Johnny and Dorsey Burnette along with guitarist Paul Burlison, created an absolutely wonderful body of all-out energy rock and roll. Their "Train Kept a'rollin'" featured some of the most creative guitar work of the genre (possibly played by ace session man Grady Martin). Johnny had a standard-setting wild and energetic vocal style and the band always played all out. The band never reach superstar status, but they certainly should have!
5. Gene Vincent: Vincent and his Blue Caps were another incredibly influential group. His "Be Bop a Lula" carved a new and different facet onto the rockabilly diamond with its unique style. The original Blue Caps featured another of the greatest guitarists of the genre, Cliff Gallup. Gallup's solo work on the early recordings set the standard for hundreds of guitarists that came after him and continues to do so today. His solo work on "Race With the Devil" is often mentioned as some of the greatest soloing in the history of rock and roll.
6. Eddie Cochran: Cochran died tragically young in a car crash that also seriously injured his friend Gene Vincent. Cochran had the charm and charisma that many thought could give him what he needed to even surpass Presley as a rock and roll idol. He was a natural musical talent and another of rock and roll's foundational guitar players. His good looks and easy nature also made him the standard by which many modern rockabilly bands define their visual image. He died before he ever realized his full potential, but left some wonderful rockabilly classics behind such as "Something Else," "20 Flight Rock," and the popular favorite, "Summertime Blues."

The cost of an electronic drum kit can vary. You can get a good, basic set for much less than a traditional acoustic set would cost. However, if you want all the bells and whistles that can be found with advanced sets these days, you will need to splash out on an expensive drum kit. Make sure you spend a little time researching all the different components of electronic drum kits in order to get the features and specs you want.

Rap Music: Then and Now

Rap music, which traces its origin to the African-American culture, is now allegedly a chaotic-sounding-genre of music with provoking lyrics and videos showing random violence, gang intimidation and such themes.
The earlier Hip-hop-rap scene of the 50s and the 60s spoke about hopes, dreams, ideals and aspirations of both the black and white teens in the quality music by the artists of that era. Early black music united the American youth and the country's choice of music was almost parallel. There were some rebellions but they did not down-rightly produce immoral and degrading content. The earlier rap-era had artists like Stevie Wonder, Smokier Robinson, Lionel Richie, the Temptations, the Shirelles, Mary Wells, the Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, the Four Tops and their likes who gave the typical teenage romance and relationship.
Radicalism was introduced in rap with Beastie Boys' amusing "Fight for the Right to Party" and the appearance of more radical rappers like Vanilla Ice and Eminem. Rappers gradually emerged and began shouting and ranting words that featured intimidation, class conflict, hatred of authority, defiance, insolence, animosity and conflict.
The rap-music today is leading the listeners in a rather disturbing direction. It seems as though this whole culture takes pride in being notorious. For instance, it is almost like being in prison is a "status symbol" while taking drugs and indulging in beefs is something "cool". Above this, the portrayal of women in the rap videos is again a matter of concern. The perception seems to typecast the woman as an object. On humanitarian grounds, this isn't a very kind picture to create. Such materials coupled with suggestive lyrics can easily manipulate the vulnerable youth.
The blockbuster charts say a story more clearly, although it is hard to agree with. It is a choice-demand situation. People are watching, adapting and adopting such a culture which is why the top-hits are often the songs you can't hear with your mother. What saddens one more is the further lack of creativity. The poetry only goes as far as a poor vocabulary and the music is far, far from inspiring. What use is such manifestation of power and capacity to generate admirers if no good can be done to society? If Rap music boasts of a generation full of fans, then it should also remember that with recognition and admiration, comes responsibility. Rap has a responsibility towards its audience and it's time now that the artists come forth and take it up seriously.

Interestingly, those coming off of heroin or any other opiate may experience withdrawal symptoms for 7 - 14 days. Those coming off of Methadone report withdrawal symptoms lasting anywhere from 1 -2 months, depending on the amount of Methadone being taken. It is clear that often times patients aren't fully aware of the side effects and warnings regarding Methadone. This may be because the allure of a pain free withdrawal from opiates is so great that addicts aren't paying attention to the fine print, or it may be that they don't care, whatever the case, the deadly combination of Methadone and benzodiazepines is a frightening epidemic.
Benzodiazepines, or benzos, are a medication commonly prescribed for anxiety or insomnia. The most common benzos are Xanax, Valium, Klonipin and Ambien. Because of their sedative qualities, benzos are often abused. In fact a benzo addiction is one of the most common addictions in our society. Recent studies indicate that 23% of benzo users become addicted to the drug within three months of use. Researchers have also noted that while benzos have a calming effect on the body they do not work like opiates, making it the drug of choice for Methadone patients looking for a high.
Combining Methadone and Benzodiazepines is such a lethal combination that states all over the country are investigating this epidemic. In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, 28 of the 41 drug overdoses in 2008 involved Methadone and Benzos. One of the biggest reasons that benzos and Methadone create such a deadly combination is because together they cause respitory arrest. Additionally, researchers are looking into mounting evidence that Methadone causes cardiac toxicity.

The Development of Drug Criminalization in America

The development of federal statutes and the underlying reasons that led to the criminalization of psycho-active substances in American society began at the turn of the twentieth century. Society reacted to the detriment that resulted from unchecked promotion and use of heroin and cocaine by addicts, paving ethe way for the government to begin drug regulation. The problem had grown during the end of the nineteenth century due to the new methods of ingestion and the isolation of active compounds. In responding to these developments some powerful Americans would learn early on that under the guise of tackling the risks and crippling effects of addiction they could promote corporate monopolies, a single world order, and pacification of liberty. Addiction's impact on society was a small factor when compared to the actions of a powerful few who saw the masses as only pawns.
Several developments in the latter part of the nineteenth century helped boost the surge of drug use in America. Albert Niemann first isolated the highly addictive active ingredient of the coca plant 'cocaine' in 1859 (Cocaine Timeline). The first synthesis of heroin occurred during this period and is credited to C.R. Wright in 1874, who derived heroin from the purified opiate 'morphine', first isolated from opium in 1803 by F. W. A. Sertürner (Syndistar), (Musto 183). This coincided with the 1853 development of the hypodermic syringe independently produced by the Scottish physician, Alexander Wood, and French surgeon, Charles Gabriel Pravaz (Heroin Timeline). The hypodermic syringe opened a direct route to the brain for the now pure forms of cocaine and refined opiates. This powerful new combination of purified drugs along with the new method of intravenous injection with the syringe gained a foothold and resulted in a type of drug use and addiction that was previously unseen. While it seemed regulation of these new powerful combinations was going to be needed, the public never imagined citizens would be serving life sentences for distribution of these substances in the near future.

Pain Killer Addiction - The Controversy Wages On

It acts in the body the same way as heroin. Like heroin it was introduced as an effective pain management tool with few addiction risks. Heroin had found its way to this country in the late 19th Century from Germany, when scientists came up with an alternative to morphine, which was also touted as a kind of miracle drug to treat pain without fear of addiction.
The intentions were good, but the reality turned out to be a nightmare. Like morphine and heroin, oxycodone, aka OxyContin or "oxycotton" looked like it would be a like a good idea when it came to market in 1995. But in the 15 years since Purdue Pharma introduced it, the drug has become one of the most commonly abused prescription opiates.
People will abuse anything. That's human nature. If one pill is good for relieving pain, then two pills have to be better. A person may not be in pain at all, but they like the way they feel when they take the pain reliever. Anytime a drug is taken in excess, or for any other reason other than its intended purpose, that's drug abuse. Morphine was a good idea, because it helped control pain.
During the Civil War it was a\used extensively, but in the aftermath of that war, thousands were addicted. The scientists were convinced that heroin was the answer to morphine because they believed it was not habit-forming. It was manufactured in this country until 1913. Then Purdue Pharma introduced oxycodone, which is very similar in its molecular structure to heroin, claiming little addiction risk. Doctors prescribe it, it finds its way on to the street and people abuse it.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported that the rate that Milwaukee-area doctors have prescribed opioids has increased tenfold over the last 15 years. One former doctor, Robert Wetzler, was mentioned in the article because six of his patients had overdosed and died on prescription pain medication. It wasn't until six had died that any action was taken to stop him.
The availability of opiate pain medication is increasing and more of these drugs are being sold on the streets. People get a prescription and may not take all of the pills, so they leave them in the medicine cabinet. Someone else takes those pills, or they sell them. People get pills from their families or their friends.
The flood of pills happens for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that doctors prescribe oxycodone routinely. The doctor understands that if the drug is taken at the right dosage, at the right interval, it will be an effective, short-term solution for pain. He/she is not necessarily thinking about the potential for abuse, or even suspicious that the person they are treating is scamming them for drugs.
There is an internet petition out there to ban OxyContin. They want the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to revisit its approval of this widely abused opioid. The petition states that OxyContin is the "preferred substitute for heroin," and it goes on to state, "There are other products as effective as OxyContin at controlling pain but no other legal opioid has the history of misrepresentation, abuse, death and destruction of OxyContin."
As stated at the beginning of this blog, oxycodone is very similar to heroin. It is reported that the high experienced is more intense, but it's expensive. People may get some sense of false security taking the oxy because they think it's safe because it is a prescription pain medication, but heroin is less expensive. It is not uncommon for toxicology reports to show that an overdose victim had both heroin and oxycodone in their system.
The heroin on the streets has no standards. You don't know what you're buying and the buyer has no idea what the drug has been "cut" with. The drugs would never be sold for recreational purposes, people would be mindful of the harmful effects, and alternative forms of treatment would be offered. But we want a quick and easy way to feel better and drugs are the answer for too many people.
