Carribean Rhapsody by James Carter: CD Review

Caribbean Rhapsody from Emarcy records features saxophone virtuoso James Carter. The recording is the culmination of a decade long collaboration between the jazz giant and classical composer, Robert Sierra. The music is written in a modern style, with jazz elements of improvisation combined with Latin heritage and classical genres.
Two works are showcased on the CD. The first is Roberto Sierra's Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra, recorded in Warsaw with the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra, conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero. James Carter solos on soprano and tenor saxophones. Carter calls the composition a "delicate yet strong balance of written music, improvisation and the cadenzas." Bright orchestration, syncopation and strong accents open the concerto. A plaintive saxophone melody intervenes. Percussive effects from orchestra and tenor sax lead into a kind of atonal bluesy boogie woogie in the third movement. A free improvisation on tenor saxophone, complete with slap-tonguing, squealing and a soulful, masculine feel leads us into the title track, Caribbean Rhapsody.
The second composition, Caribbean Rhapsody, also composed by Sierra, is a joyful chamber piece with alternating reflective and spirited music. It bounces from the sensuous opening bolero to Latin riffs to music he heard on jukeboxes from cafes he frequented in Puerto Rico. Sierra wrote the piece as a musical reunion for saxophonist Carter and his cousin, violinist, Regina Carter. The juxtaposition of saxophone and violin, viola, cello and bass is a refreshingly new hybrid of musical elements. The CD ends with another improvised interlude played on soprano saxophone by James Carter with a tender female quality complete with buzzing, trills, turns, extensive florid sections and a fade into musical eternity conclusion.
Jazz virtuoso, James Carter, an instinctual player, explores every sound his heart and saxophone can generate. He defies comfortable categorization and is fascinated with cross-pollination of musical idioms. Regina Carter's career has spanned classical, jazz and African folk idioms. She was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship (often termed `the genius grant").
Carter and Sienna astound with their melding talents. Sienna becomes a musical appendage for James Carter's musical dreams. One of his greatest challenges was integrating Carter's improvisational passages into his written score. His orchestration is masterful. Elvis Made Rockabilly Music Seem Like a Natural Outgrowth of Rhythm and Blues and Country Music

Lots of people credit the great Elvis Presley with inventing rockabilly music. While many people will argue just as strongly against that hypothesis as others will for it, one thing is for certain: It was Elvis who brought the music to the attention of the world.

At the same time, he reached back to his country roots too with songs like Bill Monroe's classic "Blue Moon of Kentucky," "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone," and "I Forgot to Remember to Forget."
But more than the songs he chose to record, he dipped deep into the influences of the musicians he'd listened to growing up. Blues men, country gentlemen, wild rhythm and blues acts, and raucous gospel choirs all left their mark on the King and they helped to form the boy who would become the greatest rock and roll star the world has ever known.
And the thing that was most amazing about Elvis is that in melding these musical influences so seamlessly, he made it seem like it was a totally natural and logical step in the progression of music. After Elvis convinced everyone that this new music made perfect sense, many other artists broke through with their versions of rockabilly. These artists built upon what Elvis started. Some were wilder than Elvis. Some were more polished than the King in his early days. But none made a bigger impact.
No one would ever again question whether what these cats were doing was real. (Well, there were the establishment "grow ups" who fought against it, but rock and roll proved them epically wrong!) That's because Elvis made it real. He made is seem natural and no matter how unlikely it seems if you analyze what happened that anyone could marry the blues with country music to create a completely new sensation, that's exactly what Elvis did. Overall these speakers looked very similar to early Advent speakers despite the significant improvements "under the hood". There were a few noticeable differences with the Advent Speaker however. First, the beveled front on this new speaker was more rounded than previously. The front grill was made darker in almost a burlap color instead of the traditional Advent off white. The driver cut outs on the grills were made more rectangular.
Fans of the Large Advent Loudspeaker enjoy it for its high quality vintage sound. The bass response is incredible deep compared to other similar era speakers like the Dynaco A-25's. The midrange was described as creamy and clear however this is not the strongest audio range on the Advent Speaker. The high ends are clear and uncolored.
